1930's Cars in Barns

"I ran across these barn finds for the first time in 1967. An old man in our neighborhood had every car he had ever owned sitting in his yard. That is, every car but one. He said some guys from 'the city' had talked him out of his first car, it had carbide headlights, so you know it was old. I wonder if that car ended up in a museum. Anyway, I made his acquaintance through a mutual friend, and got a chance to see some of the cars up close. In an old barn on his property, I found two old 1930's cars.

There was a '33 Chevy sedan with wide whitewalls. It was hand painted red with flames. It had the canvas top, which even then had rotted and collapsed. Apparently, his two sons had used the car in the 1950's to run around town. It had that 50's hot rod look! There was also a '36 Hudson Terraplane sedan. It was nothing fancy, but a good example of a typical family sedan from its day.

Fast forward to 2012. I was looking at my old neighborhood on a website showing a bird's eye view of the town via satellite. I noticed that the old barn was still there and there were cars still scattered around the property. I contacted an old neighbor through facebook and found out that the cars were still there! The old man had passed on, but I was able to talk to his son and he allowed me to see and photograph the cars. I just recovered the '36 Terraplane from the barn and I'm going back in June for the '33 Chevy!

There ARE still old cars out there. Keep up the good work on the web site."

"I found this old Buick behind a house that's being torn down. Seems to be complete, but it's sinking into the ground on flat tires. Looks like a Skylark grille, but GS badges and hood. Not sure what the deal is."

"I know this is a well known spot, but my wife and I were driving from East Texas to New Mexico and stopped at the 'Cadillac Ranch' near Amarillo. It's a well known display of tail fin cars."
